Brussels – In a meeting held in Brussels, the ministers responsible for economic matters from EU member states discussed ways to enhance the competitiveness of the European economy. Dejan Židan, State Secretary at Slovenia’s Ministry of Economy, remarked, “At the heart of the EU lies a thriving economy; it is crucial for us to swiftly and effectively bolster our competitiveness.”
The discussion included the newly introduced EU Competitiveness Compass, which outlines the strategic direction for the European Commission’s work in its current term, along with an agreement on clean industry initiatives designed to accelerate the decarbonization of European manufacturing.
Židan stressed the significance of the current period, urging that efforts be made to assist industries in navigating their challenges and enhancing their competitiveness in the global marketplace. He proposed that, under Poland’s EU Council presidency, the focus should be on simplifying existing regulations rather than introducing new ones.
He also called for new instruments such as the European Competitiveness Fund to be accessible and customized for smaller member states, emphasizing that a revised framework for state aid should provide more effective and targeted support.
Moreover, the Slovenian State Secretary insisted on prioritizing reliable energy sources for the industry at competitive prices, aligning with those of international partners and competitors.
During discussions about the action plan for the European automotive sector, he underscored the importance of providing support to this industry through public funding and ensuring it is not neglected. (March 13)
