STRASBOURG (ANP) – Members of the European Parliament are increasingly concerned about the repercussions of the ongoing tariff dispute. According to social democrats, “employees, companies, and economies on both sides of the Atlantic are suffering the consequences of these import duties.”
“This trade conflict is unwelcome, but we must safeguard our economy and industry,” stated Dutch MEP Dirk Gotink (NSC), a member of the leading European faction, the center-right European People’s Party (EPP). “We have made it clear that we are seeking to de-escalate tensions, but we will not allow ourselves to be subjected to unjust and damaging tariffs on our exports.”
“Europe does not desire a trade war with the US,” emphasized Dutch MEP Catarina Vieira (GroenLinks-PvdA). “However, Trump and his administration adhere to an ideology that is detrimental not only to his supporters but also to the global economy. His unwillingness to negotiate with the EU compels us to take this stance until he retracts his tariffs.”
