French President Emmanuel Macron has called for greater support of European defense industries by encouraging buyers of U.S. weapons to consider European alternatives.
“Those who purchase the Patriot missile defense system should also be offered the Franco-Italian SAMP/T system. Those opting for the F-35 fighter jet should be presented with the Rafale as an alternative. This is how we can boost our production rates,” Macron stated in a recent interview with Le Parisien.
His remarks come at a time when European NATO members are relying on U.S. weaponry more than ever. This month, the Netherlands and Belgium reaffirmed their plans to acquire American-made F-35 fighter jets. Meanwhile, Portugal is reconsidering its decision to replace its U.S.-made F-16s with F-35s due to concerns over Washington’s position within NATO.
To enhance the competitiveness of French defense products, Macron has urged French defense companies to streamline bureaucratic procedures and lower costs, according to Nice-Matin.
He also shed light on the potential deployment of European troops in Ukraine, emphasizing that any mission would involve sending a few thousand soldiers per country to key locations for training programs. The objective is to provide long-term support and assistance, rather than direct combat engagement.
Regarding Russia’s conditions for negotiating a ceasefire in Ukraine, Macron dismissed them as “unacceptable,” reinforcing his stance on backing Kyiv against Russian aggression.
