Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó urged Ukraine to refrain from attacking energy infrastructure supplying Hungary, as Kyiv continues efforts to weaken Russia’s military capabilities. On Tuesday, Ukraine’s armed forces announced they had targeted several key Russian sites involved in supporting the country’s aggression against Ukraine.
Hungary has been benefiting from a temporary exemption to the European Union’s ban on Russian oil, significantly increasing its purchases through land-based pipelines and profiting from discounted crude.
In September, Ukraine approved an agreement allowing Hungary to keep buying Russian oil, despite Kyiv imposing sanctions on a major supplier. Under the deal, the oil is classified as Hungarian once it crosses into Ukraine, permitting its continued transit.
Hungary has consistently pushed back against EU initiatives to further cut reliance on Russian energy. Last week, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán blocked what would have been a unanimous EU statement reaffirming support for Ukraine and endorsing stricter sanctions against Moscow.
