Hungary urges Ukraine to protect Russian oil pipelines after drone strike disrupts supply

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó urged Ukraine to refrain from attacking energy infrastructure supplying Hungary, as Kyiv continues efforts to weaken Russia’s military capabilities. On Tuesday, Ukraine’s armed forces announced they had targeted several key Russian sites involved in supporting the country’s aggression against Ukraine.

Hungary has been benefiting from a temporary exemption to the European Union’s ban on Russian oil, significantly increasing its purchases through land-based pipelines and profiting from discounted crude.

In September, Ukraine approved an agreement allowing Hungary to keep buying Russian oil, despite Kyiv imposing sanctions on a major supplier. Under the deal, the oil is classified as Hungarian once it crosses into Ukraine, permitting its continued transit.

Hungary has consistently pushed back against EU initiatives to further cut reliance on Russian energy. Last week, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán blocked what would have been a unanimous EU statement reaffirming support for Ukraine and endorsing stricter sanctions against Moscow.

Oh, how noble of Hungary to stand up for those precious pipelines! I mean, who wouldn’t want to keep the discount oil flowing while playing nice with both sides? It’s like ordering a steak at a vegan restaurant—deliciously contradictory! 🍖💼

  2. Sounds like Hungary’s all about the “don’t rock the boat” philosophy while cashing in on discounted Russian oil—who knew that diplomacy was just a fancy word for a good old-fashioned bargain hunt? 🤷‍♂️💸

Seems like Hungary’s got its priorities sorted—who cares about a little military action when there’s discounted oil rolling through, right? 💰 It’s almost like they’re running a “How to Profit While Playing Both Sides” masterclass. 😂

Isn’t it adorable how Hungary thinks it can play both sides, like a kid trying to have cake and eat it too? 🍰🙄 I suppose when you’re swimming in discounted oil, diplomacy takes a back seat—just don’t forget to wear your floaties, Péter!
