Prosecutors have revealed that members of a Russian spy network conducted surveillance on journalists, including Bulgarian investigative reporter Christo Grozev. Grozev had previously exposed the Russian operatives behind the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal. Additionally, the group spied on Ukrainian soldiers who were receiving training at a U.S. military base in Germany, aiming to track them once they returned to Ukraine.
“This was an exceptionally sophisticated operation, unlike anything I’ve encountered in my more than 20 years in counterterrorism,” said Commander Dominic Murphy, head of counterterrorism at the Metropolitan Police, in an interview with the PA news agency.
Murphy described the spy gadgets found in Great Yarmouth and London as resembling something “straight out of a spy novel.”
Three individuals denied any wrongdoing, arguing that they were unaware they were aiding Russia. One of them, Ivanova, was also convicted of possessing fraudulent passports.
Meanwhile, three other members of the network—Orlin Roussev, Bizer Dzhambazov, and Ivan Stoyanov—had already pleaded guilty.
All six individuals are scheduled to be sentenced in May.
