Brussels – Slovenia has expressed its readiness to back Germany’s proposal for a long-term easing of European public financial regulations to accommodate defense investments, as stated by Prime Minister Robert Golob. He also revealed plans for Slovenia to accelerate the increase in its defense budget.
“If Germany indeed proposes a change to fiscal rules for an extended period—possibly up to ten years—we will support such an initiative; anything else is mere speculation at this stage,” Golob remarked as he arrived for the extraordinary European Council meeting focused on bolstering European defense and providing further assistance to Ukraine.
He also endorsed the potential for flexibility with current regulations, a proposal being put forward by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, which is expected to be applicable over the next four years.
Furthermore, Golob announced that Slovenia aims to raise its defense spending to two percent of GDP before 2030, in light of challenging geostrategic conditions. The specific measures for this increase will be determined by Slovenian authorities by the time of the NATO summit in The Hague in June. (March 6)
