Hasselt Children Operate Crane at PXL-STEM Construction Camp

Hasselt (Eurotoday) – Kids at the PXL-STEM Academy construction camp in Hasselt got hands-on experience with real construction work, including operating a crane. Lars and Leander Vandekerkhof (8) found it fun but challenging, while Nathan Nuts (12) enjoyed it and hopes to become a construction worker. PXL University College has 271 construction students, the highest number in Flanders.

At the PXL-STEM Academy in Hasselt, kids had the opportunity to operate a real construction crane. The camp included activities like bricklaying, roofing, and woodworking. Officials explained that this initiative helps children learn about different construction jobs. After learning how the crane works, they eagerly pressed buttons and moved it, experiencing what it’s like to be a real construction worker.

How Did Hasselt Kids Learn Construction Skills at PXL Camp?

Twin brothers Lars and Leander Vandekerkhof were excited about attending the construction camp. At just 8 years old, they enjoy trying new things. While they had fun building with bricks and working with wood, Leander found operating the crane easy once he got used to it, whereas Lars noted that the wind made it more difficult.

Although they may not pursue construction careers in the future, both agreed that the camp was a great way to explore different jobs and understand the importance of skilled trades.

“Every year we look for fun camps, and this camp seemed fun to us,” said Lars.

“We can do bricklaying, woodworking, and now we are operating a crane,” added Leander.

Twelve-year-old Nathan Nuts was another enthusiastic participant who excelled at using the crane. With a remote control hanging around his neck, he skillfully moved the crane to lift a concrete tub and place it precisely between two posts.

Nathan compared the experience to a funfair game and expressed his strong interest in becoming a construction worker. He especially enjoys woodworking and found the camp to be an excellent way to learn more about construction.

“A bit like grabbing stuffed animals at the funfair,” said Nathan Nuts.

According to officials, the PXL-STEM Academy’s construction camp is a fun and engaging way for kids to explore the construction industry. The camp aims to inspire some of them to pursue studies at PXL University College.

They highlighted the popularity of PXL’s PLACEHOLDERb934cd40ca6d98b1 program. This year, 271 students are enrolled in construction studies at the university, making it the leading institution for construction education in PLACEHOLDER3351f785c1989872. Through this camp, children are introduced to real construction tools such as cranes and gain hands-on experience in woodworking and bricklaying.
