Ljubljana – On Wednesday, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob engaged in a series of consultative discussions in preparation for the extraordinary EU summit scheduled for Thursday in Brussels, where the primary focus will be on additional support for Ukraine. During the summit, Golob plans to advocate for allocating a portion of Slovenia’s defense and security funds to enhance the nation’s resilience against contemporary security challenges.
As part of his preparatory efforts, Golob conversed on Wednesday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who briefed the prime minister on a recent gathering of European and global leaders in London and shared news about an upcoming peace plan for Ukraine. Golob also had discussions with various other European leaders, according to his office.
In Brussels, Golob intends to argue that Slovenia should divert some of its defense and security funding to bolster overall resilience against modern security threats. This includes investments in dual-use technologies, strengthening the domestic defense industry, enhancing cybersecurity, and developing infrastructure, notably in healthcare, as outlined by the prime minister’s office. They emphasized that Slovenia remains a safe nation with a low threat level.
Prime Minister Golob is participating in this extraordinary EU leaders’ meeting in light of recent changes in US foreign policy and the suspension of US aid to Ukraine, focusing on further assistance for Kyiv and strategies for Europe to enhance its defense capabilities. (March 5)
