Brussels – European Union sources have warned that the UK must choose between an agreement with Europe to reduce border checks on goods or a free-trade deal with the US, according to The Telegraph.
“The UK Government will have to make up its mind,” an EU diplomat in Brussels told The Telegraph.
Do they prefer to get American chlorine chicken in Britain or to send Stilton cheese to Europe?”
they stated.
Donald Trump has suggested that the UK and US could reach a “great” and “real” trade agreement “very soon” following his meeting with Sir Keir Starmer at the White House. He indicated that such a deal would exempt the UK from the punitive US tariffs he has threatened to impose on the rest of Europe since returning to office.
Sir Keir Starmer is aiming to secure a veterinary agreement with the EU, which would eliminate trade barriers on animal and plant products between the UK, the EU, and Northern Ireland. However, EU diplomatic sources have warned that such an agreement would make a fully fledged trade deal with the US unattainable.
How would an EU SPS deal impact UK-US trade?
Senior sources have made it clear that the cost of an “SPS” deal on food safety—part of Sir Keir’s post-Brexit reset—would be the UK aligning with EU regulations. These measures would make it nearly impossible to import US agricultural products such as beef, which has long been a point of contention with the US.
Experts point out that the UK Government’s commitment to securing an SPS agreement with the European Union would almost certainly rule out a comprehensive US trade deal. Instead, the Government believes that smaller agreements could be exempt from tariffs while still deepening trade ties with the EU.
Rather than pursuing the full free-trade deal sought by Brexiteers since the UK left the EU, UK officials reportedly prefer a series of smaller, sector-specific agreements in areas such as AI.
