European Leaders Scramble for Peace Plan After White House Clash
European leaders are urgently working to draft a peace proposal after a heated confrontation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former U.S. President Donald Trump erupted during their White House meeting on Friday.
Following a high-level summit, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the need for collective action. “We need to deliver together,” he stated. “We are at a crossroads in history today.”
Ahead of the talks, Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron announced they would lead efforts to draft a peace plan to present to Trump.
Tensions escalated further when Zelenskyy left Washington without securing a U.S.-Ukraine minerals agreement. European officials had viewed the deal as a crucial step in ensuring Trump’s commitment to Ukraine’s security.
After the summit, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed the need to bolster Europe’s defenses. “We urgently have to rearm Europe,” she stated, revealing plans to present a “comprehensive plan” on the matter at a European leaders’ meeting on Thursday.
“It’s about turning Ukraine into a steel porcupine that is indigestible for potential invaders,” von der Leyen added.
The next round of high-level discussions among European leaders is scheduled to take place in Brussels on Thursday.
