Paris – The steel industry, employing over 300,000 individuals across Europe, is expressing concern over a 25% tariff hike that the United States announced in mid-February, set to take effect on March 12.
In response, an urgent meeting of European ministers is scheduled for Thursday in Paris to discuss measures aimed at preserving steel production on the continent, where the industry originated.
The European Commission has condemned the tariffs as “unjustified,” asserting that they would be “illegal” and detrimental to economic interests.
Eurofer, the European trade union representing the steel sector, warns that the EU could face a loss of up to 3.7 million tonnes in steel exports to the United States, which is its second-largest export market.
Last week, European Commissioner for Trade, Maroš Šefčovič, visited Washington in a bid to alleviate tensions. He urged against mutual hostilities over steel, highlighting that Europe’s specialized steel production is “essential for American companies.” (February 25, 2025)
