Tusk Calls for Greater European Defense Spending Amid Security Concerns
European leaders are pushing for stronger commitments to defense and security funding in response to geopolitical challenges. Following a meeting with European Council President António Costa, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized the need for increased European mobilization in defense.
“I hope … that this greater mobilization of Europe, both member states and Europe as a whole, when it comes to defense and security funding, will become an unequivocal fact,” Tusk stated.
On Tuesday, Costa announced plans for a video conference among European leaders on Wednesday morning. This meeting, scheduled ahead of a special summit, is aimed at discussing French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent visit to Washington, D.C., where he met with U.S. President Donald Trump to advocate for security guarantees for Ukraine.
The urgency of these discussions comes after Trump questioned U.S. involvement in Ukraine and criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, referring to him as a “dictator without elections.”
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Costa stated on social media, “We are living a defining moment for Ukraine and European security,” as he justified convening the special summit.
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is scheduled to meet with Trump on Thursday. Ahead of that meeting, Starmer announced that the United Kingdom will increase its defense spending to 2.5 percent of GDP by 2027.
