Traffic Chaos in Dendermonde: Two Lanes Closed at Mechelse Poort Since Yesterday

Dendermonde (Eurotoday) – Important traffic updates indicate that Dendermonde is experiencing severe congestion due to unexpected roadworks at the Mechelse Poort intersection, which began yesterday. Initial work conducted by the contractor on the Noordlaan required the closure of two out of the four available lanes.

The Mechelse Poort intersection in Dendermonde has faced significant disruptions after sudden roadworks caused substantial traffic delays between yesterday and today. Preparatory work on Noordlaan forced the closure of two lanes, leading to prolonged delays for motorists. The situation worsened due to inadequate signage and malfunctioning traffic light settings. However, adjustments were made today to improve traffic flow.

Yesterday morning, Noordlaan saw heavy congestion, with drivers from Appels and Oudegem enduring two-hour delays before reaching the intersection. The issue arose when a construction contractor blocked two lanes to start excavation for foundation work at the Noordlaan exit. The ongoing excavation is preparing the ground for a crane tower’s foundation.

Local police officer Patrick Feys acknowledged the lack of effective communication between law enforcement, the Roads and Traffic Agency, and the contractors.

“We offer our apologies for the inconvenience yesterday, but we are keeping a close eye on things with our partners.”

Since then, signage has been improved, and the traffic light system has been adjusted to prevent further congestion.

The police admitted that the initial signage around the work zone was inadequate.

“But that has now been corrected,”

said Feys.

“Together with the various partners, we have placed the signage closer to the intersection and we hope that everyone drives through to the works and only merges at the end.”

“Yesterday was also extra busy because of the weekly market day, so we expect it to be quieter for the rest of the week. The contractor is also working to pour the base on Thursday instead of Friday. From then on, a total of three lanes should be available.”

This redevelopment project aims to integrate three regional roads while completing improvements at the Mechelse Poort intersection. It includes constructing three tunnels for pedestrians and cyclists, a cycle bridge, and a rainwater storage system. The first phase, involving a tunnel beneath Noordlaan, has been completed. The second phase is set to begin on March 12 and will focus on the eastern section of Scheldebrug and the western part of Leopoldlaan. The entire project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2026.

What is the historical significance of the Mechelse Poort Intersection?

The Mechelse Poort intersection in Dendermonde is a crucial traffic hub that connects regional roads, facilitating transit between Appels, Oudegem, and surrounding areas. Previously, the intersection struggled with increasing traffic volumes due to its outdated infrastructure, necessitating a large-scale redevelopment project.

The 2026 project focuses on modernizing the intersection while incorporating sustainability by building pedestrian tunnels, a cycle bridge, and a rainwater buffer system. This initiative aligns with Dendermonde’s broader strategy to enhance mobility and road safety in a city known for its historical heritage and strategic location along the Scheldt River. The transformation of the intersection underscores the city’s commitment to balancing historical preservation with modern urban development.

Looks like Dendermonde has decided to host its own version of “Survivor: Traffic Edition.” Who knew a little roadwork could turn the charming Mechelse Poort into a real-life escape room? 🚧😂
