Kyiv (dpa) – On Monday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Council President António Costa arrived in Kyiv to stand in solidarity with Ukraine as the nation marks the third anniversary of Russia’s large-scale invasion. Their visit signals continued support for Ukraine, particularly in light of U.S. President Donald Trump expressing intentions to significantly cut American aid and to urge both Ukraine and Russia to negotiate an end to the conflict.
During her train journey to Kyiv, von der Leyen announced her plans to unveil a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing the EU’s arms production and defense capabilities, which is expected to benefit Ukraine. She also indicated that additional measures would be implemented to bolster energy security for both Ukraine and the European Union. This includes the goal of fully integrating the electricity markets of Ukraine and neighboring Moldova into the EU electricity market by the end of next year.
Upon her arrival in Kyiv, von der Leyen shared her message on platform X: “We are in Kyiv today because Ukraine is Europe. In this fight for survival, it is not only Ukraine’s future that is at stake but also Europe’s.”
