Why Did a Man with Mental Health Issues Spark a Rooftop Standoff in Izegem?
Emergency responders, including police and firefighters, worked for hours to assist the distressed man. They engaged in nearly three hours of negotiations to convince him to come down safely. Their priority was ensuring both his safety and that of those nearby. The authorities took a patient approach, carefully considering their options to resolve the situation without the use of force. After extensive discussions, the man ultimately decided to come down voluntarily.
Vyncke stated:
“After almost three hours of talking to him, the man came down. He was taken to the hospital and may face compulsory admission, but nothing has been decided on that yet. The public prosecutor has been notified.”
Once safely on the ground, the man was taken to the hospital for an evaluation. Officials noted that he might require mental health care, but no final decision has been made yet.
The public prosecutor’s office has been informed and will assist in determining the next steps. The Grote Markt, which had been closed for safety reasons, reopened to the public around noon, restoring normalcy. Authorities emphasized that the swift response from emergency teams played a crucial role in ensuring safety for all.
