Munich/Bratislava – Slovak President Peter Pellegrini emphasized on Sunday that any sustainable resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine is contingent upon the active involvement of Europe and the European Union. His remarks came at the conclusion of the Munich Security Conference (MSC), as reported by TASR’s special correspondent.
Pellegrini stated, “Any agreement aimed at achieving a lasting ceasefire or peace will fail without security guarantees from EU member states. The durability of that peace will rely heavily on the EU’s position and its strength,” he stressed.
The president also expressed concerns regarding the potential exclusion of Europe from peace negotiations. He acknowledged that Europe might not be present during the early stages of discussions but remained confident that it would ultimately play a role.
Pellegrini indicated that the decision regarding the EU’s involvement would largely be up to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. During his address at the Munich conference, Zelensky made it clear that he opposes any peace agreements that do not include Ukraine and Europe in the negotiations between Russia and the United States.
On the last day of the 61st MSC, Pellegrini held a meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb and representatives from Meta. He noted that this marked the first official meeting at the head of state level between Slovakia and Finland in a decade, during which both leaders reaffirmed the strong relations between their countries and extended invitations for future visits. The two also discussed the current gas transit situation and the upcoming gathering of European leaders aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. (February 16)
