European Leaders Plan Emergency Summit in Paris Amid Ukraine Crisis
European leaders are set to convene an emergency summit in Paris as concerns grow over NATO’s role in Ukraine and tensions with Russia.
Europe to Take a Greater Role in NATO
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the need for Europe to step up within NATO in collaboration with the United States to ensure Ukraine’s security and counter the threat from Russia. “It’s clear Europe must take on a greater role in NATO as we work with the United States to secure Ukraine’s future and face down the threat we face from Russia,” Starmer stated, according to media reports.
Poland Confirms Paris Meeting
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski confirmed the meeting while speaking at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday. He announced that Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, will attend the summit, which is expected to address concerns regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach to transatlantic relations and Ukraine.
The exact list of participants for the Paris meeting remains unclear.
High-Level Talks in Brussels
Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is scheduled to meet in Brussels on Monday with Keith Kellogg, U.S. President Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia.
Trump Administration’s Ukraine Diplomacy
The emergency summit follows a pivotal week in which Trump held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding potential peace negotiations over the Ukraine conflict. Trump’s team has proposed an in-person meeting in Saudi Arabia to further discussions.
U.S. officials are set to travel to Saudi Arabia in the coming days to initiate peace talks. However, the European Union has not been invited to participate, and Ukrainian officials have reportedly not been informed of any planned discussions. No Ukrainian delegation is currently slated to attend the meetings in Saudi Arabia.
