Commission: EU to Respond ‘Swiftly and Strongly’ to US’s ‘Unjustified’ Tariffs

Today, the European Commission issued a statement emphasizing that the EU will respond swiftly and firmly to the “unjustified” tariffs proposed by US President Donald Trump.

The Commission views Trump’s plan for “reciprocal” tariffs as a “step in the wrong direction.” This reaction comes in light of the White House’s announcement regarding the imposition of tariffs aimed at restoring “justice” in trade relations between the United States and other nations.

The European Commission points out that the EU already maintains some of the lowest tariffs globally and finds no reason for the increased tariffs on its exports to the US. They reiterated, “The EU will consistently defend European businesses, workers, and consumers against unwarranted tariff measures.”

Furthermore, the Commission cautions that tariffs create economic uncertainty and hinder the efficiency and integration of global markets. They highlight that global trade has thrived under stable, transparent regulations and low tariffs. Additionally, the statement reminds that the EU has long collaborated with trading partners like the US to lower tariffs and trade barriers worldwide, reinforcing this open approach through strong commitments to a rules-based trading system—commitments that the US is now compromising.
