The truck driver attempted to prevent a collision by swerving, but this caused his vehicle to spin out of control before crashing into a residential building in Moorsele. The driver, named Michael, lost control of his steering wheel during the maneuver, leading to the crash. Fortunately, an elderly couple living in the house, both aged 88, remained unharmed despite the extensive damage to their home.
The accident happened on Maalstraat, a narrow country road where speeding is common. In an interview, Michael described his shock when a vehicle with a black-and-white license plate suddenly appeared before him.
“I reflexively threw my steering wheel over, but I hit a culvert in the ditch on the side of the road. That’s probably why my right front wheel broke off. I couldn’t steer or brake anymore.”
He explained.
The elderly couple had been watching TV when they heard a loud crash. The 88-year-old woman recalled,
“When I came outside, I thought our entire house had collapsed. I was very shocked, of course. I had to take a sleeping pill to be able to sleep.”
Maalstraat is notorious for its narrow layout and frequent speeding violations. Michael added,
“I live a bit further away and know that people often drive too fast on this street.”
The crash caused significant damage to the garage and surrounding property, though no injuries were reported. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about road safety in the area, especially on narrow streets where high speeds can lead to dangerous accidents.
