The European Parliament has issued a reminder to lawmakers to prioritize using its official communication platforms, Microsoft Teams and Jabber, whenever possible. Signal should only be used as an alternative when these tools are unavailable.
“The use of Signal is recommended as a secure alternative in cases where no equivalent corporate tool is available,” the Parliament’s press service stated. However, it declined to provide further details on its cybersecurity measures.
This advice follows a similar recommendation from the European Commission in 2020, which encouraged staff to use Signal for secure communication.
In 2023, multiple EU institutions also banned TikTok from work-related devices, instructing approximately 32,000 staff members to remove the app from official devices and any personal devices that contain work-related applications. This decision led to similar restrictions across European countries.
Signal is widely regarded as a secure messaging platform due to its end-to-end encryption and open-source framework, making it a preferred choice among cybersecurity experts and privacy advocates.
