UN Rights Office Calls for Humane Treatment of Israeli Hostages and Palestinian Detainees

Disturbing Conditions of Israeli Hostages and Palestinian Detainees Highlighted by UN

The distressing images of emaciated Israeli hostages and Palestinian detainees released as part of the initial phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement have raised significant concerns, UN spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan stated in a recent statement.

He emphasized that photographs of Israeli hostages freed over the weekend indicate clear signs of mistreatment and malnutrition, underscoring the harsh conditions they endured in Gaza.

“We are also deeply troubled by the public display of hostages released by Hamas, as well as statements seemingly made under duress during their release,” Al-Kheetan added.

Urgent Calls for the Release of All Hostages and Detainees

At the same time, testimonies from Palestinians released from Israeli detention reveal similarly severe conditions, which the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has described as deeply concerning.

“Both Israel and Hamas must ensure that all individuals held in their custody are treated humanely and are not subjected to any form of torture or abuse,” Al-Kheetan urged.

He reiterated that under international law, torture and other forms of mistreatment of protected persons are considered war crimes, and those responsible must be held accountable accordingly.

“We reaffirm that the taking of hostages constitutes a war crime,” he stressed.

“Hamas must immediately and unconditionally release all hostages. Likewise, Israel must immediately and unconditionally release all individuals who have been arbitrarily detained.”

Isn’t it just delightful when the UN decides to remind everyone that treating people like humans is a requirement? I suppose next they’ll be suggesting we share our snacks at the office too. 🍩🙄

Who knew the UN had such a flair for the obvious? 🎭 I mean, when has anyone ever mistreated hostages or detainees before? Absolute shocker, innit? 🙄

Just what we needed, more calls for humane treatment—because clearly, sending out a press release is going to change the world, innit? 🤷‍♂️ Honestly, maybe we should just start a ‘kindness campaign’ while we’re at it, eh?

  4. Seems like the UN’s finally decided to host a humanitarian fashion show featuring the latest trends in mistreatment. Who knew hostage-taking came with a side of malnutrition? 🤷‍♂️ #HumanRightsOrWhat

  5. Isn’t it charming how the UN just found its moral compass while juggling a flaming circus of hostages and detainees? 🤡 Bravo, Thameen, next you’ll tell us that water is wet! 🥴

Oh, look at the UN playing referee in a game of “who’s got it worse” – nothing like a humanitarian call to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, eh? 🤔 I guess both sides can sit around a table of equally bad snacks while we’re at it! 🍕

  7. Oh, how charming! The UN’s calling for humane treatment like it’s a suggestion for a new café menu. 🍽️ You’d think we were ordering a fine wine instead of addressing basic human rights—who knew that was still up for debate in 2023? 🙄

Oh, brilliant! It’s astounding how a global body like the UN can call for humane treatment when half the world is busy outdoing each other in a game of who can throw the meanest tantrum. 🙄 Maybe they should just put out a brochure on ‘How to Treat Hostages’ — would probably sell out faster than that last Euro football match! 😂

Oh, look at the UN, playing the moral compass while the rest of us are still trying to figure out who’s winning the blame game. It’s like asking two toddlers to share a toy—absolutely delightful to watch, innit? 😏
