Slovak MEPs Assert EU’s Right to Respond to New U.S. Tariffs

Strasbourg – Slovak Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have reached a consensus on the need for a unified response from the European Union (EU) to the recently imposed American tariffs. This agreement spans various political factions, as reported by TASR from Strasbourg.

EP Vice President Martin Hojsík (Renew Europe/RE) noted that many politicians within Slovakia’s ruling coalition once viewed Donald Trump as a hopeful ally. However, the adverse impact of his actions on job security in Slovakia has become evident. He highlighted that the European Commission (EC), which has had its share of tensions with the Slovak government, is actively working to navigate these challenges.

“In order to withstand American tariffs, European solidarity is crucial. We must come together and establish a coordinated strategy. We have the capability to impose retaliatory tariffs, but for the Euro Commission to effectively negotiate, it is essential that member states rally in support. Trump’s strategy aims to create division among us,” he explained.

Hojsík underlined that the Slovak government should collaborate closely with Brussels, as this partnership will provide optimal protection for Slovakia. He expressed hope that both entities could reach a consensus without making detrimental decisions, emphasizing that the EP will not grant the Euro Commission a “blank check” regarding countermeasures, as any retaliatory actions must consider the interests of Slovakia and other member states.

Katarína Roth Neveďalová (independent/Smer-SD) remarked that Trump’s threats do not always materialize and there remains room for negotiation, as seen with Mexico and Canada. “The EU should strive to overturn the U.S. decision, and if necessary, implement retaliatory measures, as discussed by European leaders in Brussels last week,” she stated. She is optimistic about the EU states quickly agreeing on retaliatory tariffs, while also prioritizing efforts to reverse the American tariffs that previously exempted the EU.

“Our strength lies in unity; however, some member states might seek individual agreements. That would be unconventional; we must act collectively as per the leaders’ accord reached at the informal summit. I am confident that we can establish a unified stance for all of Europe to preserve our cohesion,” she added.

Lucia Yar (Renew Europe/PS) argued that Trump’s strategy is designed to sow division within Europe, describing the current scenario as a contest of strength. She highlighted Trump’s demands, including concessions related to Greenland and specific social media regulations, alongside the introduction of tariffs.

“We have the power to decide how far we will acquiesce. If tariffs are imposed, it poses a significant challenge for Slovakia. If Trump attempts to manipulate the EU by giving Slovakia a ten percent tariff while Hungary receives only three percent, it is simply a tactic for him but a serious issue for us. Unity is our most powerful asset within the EU,” she asserted.

The EU operates as a single market, but according to the MEPs, Trump disregards this framework, treating the Union like any other country or region. “If we believe he will approach the EU with humility and not leverage his full power, we are mistaken. A decisive and united response is imperative,” she concluded. (February 12)

Isn’t it just delightful how our Slovak MEPs are suddenly all about “European solidarity”? 😂 I suppose when the American tariffs knock on the door, it’s time to hold hands and sing Kumbaya instead of keeping up that lovely facade of disunity! 🤷‍♂️

  2. Looks like Slovakia’s MEPs finally woke up from their post-summer holiday slumber to realize that Trump’s tariffs aren’t just a bad hair day for the EU. Guess it’s true what they say: when the going gets tough, the tough start calling for a “unified response” over a pint! 🍻😏
