Liechtenstein elected Brigitte Haas, a lawyer, as its new head of government on Sunday.
Haas’ Fatherland Union party secured 38.3 percent of the vote, outperforming the Progressive Citizens Party, which came in second with 27.5 percent, according to PLACEHOLDER0914d7d50c6ec962. The small conservative nation is a constitutional hereditary monarchy, where power is shared between the ruling monarchy and an elected parliament.
While Prince Hans-Adam II is the head of state, his eldest son, Prince Alois, has served as regent since 2004. A 2003 referendum granted the monarchy increased powers, including the right to veto legislation.
Voter turnout was 76.3 percent, with 16,171 ballots cast.
