Berlin (Eurotoday) – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has criticized Donald Trump’s demands for Ukraine’s rare minerals in exchange for U.S. military assistance, calling them “selfish and self-serving” in a recent interview.
In an interview with Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND) published on February 8, 2025, Scholz emphasized that as Ukraine faces an invasion by Russia, Germany supports the country without expecting any future compensation.
“That should be everyone’s attitude,”
he stated.
The German chancellor had previously described Trump’s expectations as “very selfish.”
He stressed that Ukraine’s resources should be reserved for rebuilding the country after the war and for maintaining a strong defense.
“It would be very selfish, very self-serving”
to demand anything from Ukraine in return for aid, he added.
What did Trump propose in exchange for US aid to Ukraine?
Donald Trump recently stated that he wanted “equalization” from Kyiv for Washington’s financial support, declaring:
“We’re telling Ukraine they have very valuable rare earths. We’re looking to do a deal with Ukraine where they’re going to secure what we’re giving them with their rare earths and other things.”
He further clarified:
“I want to have security of rare earth. We’re putting in hundreds of billions of dollars. They have great rare earth. And I want security of the rare earth, and they’re willing to do it.”
How is Zelensky responding to Trump’s proposal?
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the U.S. and Ukraine were planning “meetings and talks” following Trump’s announcement of a potential engagement with him next week. Zelensky expressed Ukraine’s openness to attracting investment from U.S. companies in its rare earth elements—metals widely used in electronics.
In a peace plan revealed in October, Zelensky had proposed a “special agreement” with Ukraine’s allies, allowing for “common protection” and “joint exploitation” of strategic resources. While not directly mentioning rare minerals, he cited examples such as “uranium, titanium, lithium, graphite, and other strategic resources of great value.”
