BRUSSELS (ANP) – This past weekend, Trump‘s planned tariff hikes on Mexico and Canada were a significant topic, although the implementation of these tariffs has been delayed for 30 days due to commitments made by the neighboring countries.
Von der Leyen expressed concerns that increasing US import tariffs would lead to higher costs for businesses, negatively impact workers and consumers, create unnecessary economic turmoil, and exacerbate inflation.
While the recent EU summit primarily concentrated on defense issues, transatlantic relations with the US were also a prominent focus. Von der Leyen reaffirmed that the relationship with the US is of utmost importance, stating, “It is essential for fostering peace, security, and prosperity.”
She noted that significant stakes are involved, prompting EU leaders to explore ways to enhance “pragmatic cooperation with the United States.” According to Von der Leyen, there are “new challenges and increasing uncertainties” in the current landscape.
The German politician emphasized that the EU is ready for a “robust yet constructive dialogue with the United States,” but made it clear that they will not accept everything. “We are prepared” for potential conflicts, she cautioned.
