Genk (Eurotoday) – The swimming pool at Thor Central is being developed into a water venue to serve as an alternative to the municipal swimming pool, which will undergo renovations from mid-April through September.
The city government in Genk is transforming Lake Thor Central into a swimming area because the municipal swimming pool at Thor faces a five-month closure period starting in mid-April for energy-efficient upgrades. The initiative announced through Het Belang van Limburg seeks to create a swimming area for residents outdoors.
The municipal pool renovation will add triple-glazed glass walls, better roof insulation, and efficient LED lighting systems. Students can access swimming lessons at the Boxbergheide pool as educational facilities, while recreational clubs may need to shift operations to Hasselt, yet the local lake becomes an organic swimming area alternative.
“We had been looking for a good location for a while to ensure that people can go swimming in nature,”
Says Alderman for Sports Kathleen Parthoens (CD&V).
“The water quality was tested a while ago and is fine.”
Before that happens, there is still work to be done to make the pond completely ready.
“First of all, we have to make sure that people can get in and out safely,”
Says the alderman.
“There are irons sticking out here and there, so they have to be removed.”
The bottom of the pond also needs to be tackled.
“We have to dredge the pond so that all the silt in it can be removed.”
Lanes will also be laid.
The hope is that everything will be ready by mid-April when the pool closes.
“For the time being, there will be no changing rooms or toilets. But the toilets in the Thor building are available. At most places where you can swim in nature, those things are not provided,”
Says Parthoens.
Why is Outdoor Swimming Significant for Genk?
Outdoor swimming has become a popular recreational activity in Genk, and it supports sustainability initiatives. The region strengthened its public areas by funding Thor Park improvements that promote community activities and active living. Genk demonstrates its dedication to energy-efficient infrastructure development by modernising its municipal pool.
The rising popularity of natural swimming activities across Limburg brings urgency to this project since participation in outdoor recreational swimming has been growing throughout recent years. Tests of lake water showed that the water matches safety measures, which means that residents can have peace of mind about swimming safely in an environmentally friendly space.

Nice to see Genk’s residents can now enjoy nature while dodging protruding irons and a bit of silt—just like a real spa experience, right? 🏊♂️💦 Just what we need: a swimming oasis with the ambiance of a construction site! 😂

Oh great, nothing says “luxurious swimming experience” like dodging rusty irons and silt while sharing a lake with the local wildlife. 🦆💦 Better pack a picnic and maybe a life jacket instead of a towel!

Oh, how charming! Nothing says “swimming oasis” quite like dodging a few protruding irons and navigating a silt-filled pond. Just what the locals needed—a splash of nature with a side of adventure! 😂🏊♂️
