Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, who has been at the helm for over three decades, has secured a seventh term as president, winning 86.82 percent of the vote in Sunday’s election, according to Belarusian state media.
Since Lukashenko’s controversial victory in the 2020 presidential election, more than 500,000 citizens have fled the country amidst political turmoil. The fallout from that election sparked widespread protests, which were met with a harsh crackdown by Lukashenko’s regime, resulting in thousands of political opponents and activists being imprisoned.
In recent years, Belarus has strengthened its alliance with Russia. The two nations have deepened ties, with Belarus backing Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and hosting Russian nuclear warheads on its territory.
Lukashenko also received congratulations from Chinese President Xi Jinping, as reported by Chinese state media on Monday.
