Ljubljana – In response to the challenges posed by Donald Trump’s potential return to the White House, Europe must prioritize resilience and economic recovery, emphasized Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon during an interview with the Slovenian Press Agency (STA). “We desire a strong, united, interconnected, and expanded Europe in Slovenia,” she stated.
On the topic of EU enlargement, Fajon expressed support for the ambitions of the European Commission and Commissioner Marta Kos to prepare at least “two or three” countries for EU membership within the current term. However, she stressed that the EU must also adequately prepare for this process. She described the notion of admitting countries in a package as “fantastic and idealistic but unrealistic,” underlining that the enlargement is contingent on meeting established criteria.
When it comes to the new American administration’s approach to the war in Ukraine, Fajon noted that predictions remain uncertain, though Trump has recently adopted a more assertive tone towards Russian President Vladimir Putin. “A meeting between them seems likely, along with potential pressure from Washington for Putin to conclude this conflict,” she commented. Nonetheless, she cautioned that if Ukraine is compelled to alter internationally recognized borders through military means to achieve peace, it would set a perilous precedent for global order.
The minister highlighted the security situation in the Middle East as a significant challenge for Slovenia within the UN Security Council this year. The stability of the fragile truce between Israel and Hamas relies on all parties involved, and the minister noted that international pressure remains robust on all sides.
Fajon emphasized the need for Europe to engage more confidently in discussions regarding the region’s political architecture to ensure coexistence and security for both Israelis and Palestinians. “Whether this leads to a protectorate or some form of international presence, I believe this is the likely direction, as establishing a Palestinian authority will take considerable time,” she stated.
She also addressed how Trump’s return could influence Europe’s political landscape, where far-right movements are gaining traction. Fajon warned of external interference in elections and democratic processes across Europe, compounded by the spread of disinformation.
Referring to the support of tech mogul Elon Musk, a close ally of Trump, to the German far-right AfD ahead of elections, she cautioned, “There are various external influences affecting European elections, including disinformation and political propaganda. We must remain vigilant and ready to respond.” According to her, enhancing this awareness is crucial for Slovenia as well. (January 25)
