Brussels (Eurotoday Newspaper) – The European Parliament will commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day on 29 January at noon. It will be followed by a special speech by Corrie Hermann at a plenary session in Brussels.
In honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day (27 January), President Metsola will open a solemn meeting on Wednesday January 29, 2025, at 12.00. It will be observed by a musical performance of Pál Hermann’s concerto.
As reported by the press of the EU Parliament, Corrie Hermann will then speak to MEPs and talk about the story of her father, Hungarian-born cellist and composer Pál Hermann, whom the Nazis killed in 1944. The musical performance will be played on his original Gagliano cello. After MEPs observe a minute’s silence, the tradition will conclude with a musical rendition of “Kaddish” by Maurice Ravel.

The European Parliament has held several meetings to observe International Holocaust Remembrance Day, asking members of parliament to reflect on the terrible crimes committed during the Holocaust. In her speech, she underlined the importance of recalling the past and fighting against antisemitism and racism. She made it clear in her opening words that the parliament should not become indifferent to hate and discrimination. The session closed with a minute of silence and a musical performance dedicated to the victims.
Furthermore, on 27 January 2023, during this session, Margot Friedländer, another survivor of the Holocaust, blank”>narrated her experience of the Holocaust. The session was characterized by the speech from President Metsola in which she highlighted the importance of remembering crimes against humanity and taking steps against hatred in contemporary society. The session featured musical interludes and ended with a minute of silence.
