Jablanica (Fena) – The European Union, along with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has initiated a €20 million project aimed at helping communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina that have been impacted by flooding.
This project was officially launched today in Jablanica, a city that faced significant human and material losses during the floods and landslides in October 2024.
The objective of the initiative is to rehabilitate homes, restore infrastructure, and enhance essential public services, while also stimulating the local economy by providing support to farmers and small businesses. Initial activities are set to commence in the upcoming weeks, with beneficiaries chosen based on transparent and well-defined criteria.
During her visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina in October 2024, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced this financial assistance, underlining the urgent need for support in areas affected by the disaster.
Stefano Ellero, a representative of the EU Delegation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasized the EU’s dedication to the communities impacted by this calamity.
“Through this project, we are committed to providing priority assistance in collaboration with the UNDP, IOM, and local authorities. Our aim is not only to rebuild but also to enhance resilience and mitigate the risks of future disasters,” stated Ellero.
This initiative signifies a collaborative effort among the EU, UNDP, and IOM to deliver practical and sustainable support to the region. (24.1.)
