Hera, the European Commission’s health crisis service, has entered into a contract with the American pharmaceutical company Moderna on behalf of 15 EU member states, including Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, as well as Norway and North Macedonia.
This four-year agreement allows the participating countries the option to collectively procure up to 146 million doses, with the flexibility to make purchases based on their individual national health needs and without any minimum purchase requirement.
The Commission states that this agreement will enhance the preparedness of the participating countries for future health crises and improve the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns, particularly for vulnerable populations. European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib, who oversees Hera, highlighted the vaccine’s key benefits, noting that it can be stored in standard freezers used for routine vaccines and comes in pre-filled syringes for easy delivery.
