STRASBOURG (ANP) – The message is clear: cooperation must be equitable, and European values and standards are non-negotiable.
As stated by Costa, it is crucial for both the US and EU to maintain a “stable, balanced, and predictable trade relationship.”
Von der Leyen emphasized that engaging in early discussions, exploring common interests, and being prepared to negotiate are top priorities. However, she quickly added, “we will steadfastly uphold our European principles.”
Both leaders issued an indirect warning to Trump, without mentioning him by name. They noted that the EU is actively looking to collaborate with other nations and regions.
“Today’s world is multipolar, presenting new opportunities for Europe,” remarked Costa. “The European Union must bolster its bilateral and multilateral relations with third countries, founded on shared interests, mutual prosperity, and common priorities such as climate action, sustainable development, and combating poverty and disease.”
Von der Leyen called for enhanced economic resilience within the EU. Since the new European Commission’s inception, the union has secured three new economic partnerships with Mercosur, Mexico, and Switzerland. Negotiations with Malaysia resumed on Monday. “These partnerships open up new and dynamic export markets,” the German leader noted.
“We are keen to enhance cooperation with all willing partners,” she stressed, while also underlining the importance of the relationship with the “close partner” US. “Millions of jobs on both sides of the Atlantic rely on our trade and investments, with a trade volume of 1.5 trillion euros.” Furthermore, she mentioned that Europe and the US share deep “friendships, family ties, common history, and culture.”
Von der Leyen has indicated her desire to hold discussions with American President Donald Trump in the near future, although a meeting has yet to be scheduled.
