Over 16,000 Students Expelled in Greece for Violating Mobile Phone Ban
Over 16,000 students in Greece have been expelled from schools due to violations of a newly implemented ban on mobile phone usage in classrooms, according to a report by the Bulgarian National Radio correspondent in Greece.
Despite resistance from students, the regulation will be strictly upheld, as announced by Minister of Education Kyriakos Pierakakis. Under the policy, students caught using their mobile phones face escalating consequences. A first offense results in a one-day suspension from class and parental notification, while a second offense leads to expulsion and mandatory transfer to a different school.
Psychologists underline the negative impact of mobile phone use on the mental health of adolescents, explaining that many students have developed dependencies on maintaining their social connections online. Meanwhile, teachers have observed noticeable improvements in students’ ability to focus and learn when mobile phones are removed from the classroom environment.
Parents have shown strong support for the Ministry of Education’s decision, viewing the ban as a positive step in addressing phone addiction among children. Many believe that restricting phone usage during school hours significantly encourages healthier habits and reduces over-reliance on digital devices.
