Meloni Attends Trump’s Oath, Advocates for Italy as a Bridge Between the USA and EU

Washington (ANSA) – Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made headlines as the sole European leader attending Donald Trump’s inauguration at the White House, emphasizing her goal of positioning Italy as a “bridge between the United States and the EU.” Her party articulated this aim, highlighting a “privileged relationship that restores centrality to our nation.”

Meloni’s visit is a brief mission, slightly longer than her previous two-week stay in Florida with Trump, which was significant for the release of journalist Cecilia Sala, who had been detained in Iran for three weeks. The Prime Minister was personally invited by Trump and his daughter Ivanka, making her decision to attend just before her departure, which she explained in a short video released by Palazzo Chigi.

“For a nation like Italy, which has strong ties with the United States, it’s crucial to showcase our commitment to maintaining and even enhancing that relationship during times of global and interconnected challenges,” she stated.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, she posted a message wishing the president “good work,” accompanied by a photo from their meeting in Mar-a-Lago, along with a strategic commitment: “Italy will always strive to strengthen the dialogue between the United States and Europe, as it is fundamental for the stability and growth of our communities.”

Prior to her flight to Washington, Meloni held a conversation with Ursula von der Leyen, although this discussion was not related to her mission, according to officials in Brussels. The EU leadership views the inauguration as “more of a ceremony than a meeting,” indicating that there was no need for Meloni to pass any messages to Trump on their behalf (January 20).

  1. Looks like Meloni’s really puttin’ the “fun” in “fundamental relations” with the US—who knew bridge-building could include a pit stop at Mar-a-Lago? 😂 At this rate, the only thing connecting Italy and the States will be her Instagram feed!
