Antwerp Upgrades Park van Merksem Pool with Modern Amenities

Antwerp (Eurotoday) – Antwerp’s Park van Merksem pool upgrades include reduced chlorine water treatment, a redesigned entrance, and modern systems to enhance the visitor experience.

The city has implemented changes to the swimming pool at Park van Merksem, including a new water treatment system. Stijn De Rooster, the Antwerp alderman for Sports, explained that this new method aims to improve the swimming experience. One notable benefit is its reduced use of chlorine.

What are the new upgrades at the Park van Merksem pool?

The updated water treatment method addresses common issues for swimmers, such as eye and skin irritation caused by high chlorine levels in traditional pools. With this new system, the chances of such irritation are significantly reduced.

According to local authorities, improving public facilities like the Park van Merksem swimming pool is a vital part of the city’s plans to make it more welcoming and enjoyable for residents.

Stijn De Rooster (N-VA), Antwerp’s alderman for Sports, commented:

**“This makes the water feel softer, it contains much less of the typical chlorine smell, and it prevents eye and skin irritation, which occurs much more often with conventional chlorinated water.”**

De Rooster humorously added about the pool’s upgrades, “That’s what we call diving into the new year with good news.”

He emphasized the extensive effort made to improve the pool over the past few months. These modernization efforts aim to create a better experience for visitors. While some changes might feel familiar to regular patrons, they’ve been designed to enhance the pool’s atmosphere and align it with current standards.

The alderman expressed his hope that these renovations will delight loyal customers while drawing new visitors to the facility. Key updates include a new entrance hall, modern systems, and an improved water treatment process. The goal is to offer newcomers a comfortable and refreshing swimming space.

What renovations were made in 2023?

The swimming pool at Park van Merksem, a popular recreational spot in Antwerp, underwent significant renovation starting in May 2023. This was prompted by the outdated technical systems, which were both inefficient and unsafe. As a result, the pool had to temporarily close for these critical upgrades.

The renovations involved replacing and modernizing the equipment to meet current standards. Additionally, the entrance hall—previously too small to accommodate the large number of visitors—was redesigned to improve accessibility and flow.

Local authorities noted that the redesigned entrance now feels more inviting. By addressing both technical and spatial issues, the renovations have enhanced the pool’s functionality and provided a better experience for all visitors.

Responsible councillor Stijn De Rooster (N-VA) said:

**“We also hope to welcome and pleasantly surprise new faces.”**
