Commissioner Kos Promises Montenegro Continued Support on Its EU Journey

Podgorica – During her visit to Podgorica on Thursday, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos stressed that Montenegro’s approach to joining the EU should be a collective national endeavor. She assured that Montenegro will receive support at every stage of its path towards EU membership, expressing optimism that the country could complete its accession negotiations during her term.

Kos met with Montenegro’s President, Jakov Milatović, underscoring the importance of a unified national approach to the EU integration process, which she noted is fundamentally based on merit. “I am on your team and will support you at every step,” she remarked.

The Commissioner also held discussions with Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, who expressed gratitude for her visit and reiterated Montenegro’s goal of finalizing all chapters of the accession process by 2026. He highlighted that achieving this goal will necessitate focused and coordinated efforts from both the government and the opposition, as reported by Montenegrin public radio and television RTCG. Additionally, Kos addressed the Montenegrin parliament during her visit.

Concluding her trip to Montenegro, which began its EU negotiations in June 2012, Kos is scheduled to visit Albania in February, where the country aims to complete its negotiations with the European Union by the end of 2027. (16 January)
