Humanitarians Support Families Affected by Recent Airstrike in Gaza’s Deir Al-Balah

Personnel from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) recently assessed conditions at the Yaffa and Al Somud makeshift sites in Gaza, which house over 190 families. This visit follows a reported airstrike last Friday that injured multiple residents and caused widespread destruction.

The team observed dozens of tents completely destroyed, with many others sustaining significant damage. Critical infrastructure, including water, sewage, and solar power systems, was also impacted by the strike, along with three learning spaces that suffered damages.

Humanitarian Assistance and the Call to Protect Civilians

In response to the devastation, humanitarian organizations have stepped in to support the affected families with emergency shelter supplies, non-food essentials, and food aid. Additionally, another partner has been mobilized to provide water and sanitation services to the impacted areas.

“As hostilities continue across Gaza, we reiterate that civilians must be protected at all times and their essential survival needs must be met,” said UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric during a daily media briefing in New York.

Humanitarian Efforts at a Critical Breaking Point

The crisis in Gaza has pushed humanitarian operations to a precarious tipping point, UN Humanitarian Coordinator Tom Fletcher warned in a statement. He highlighted the growing challenges in delivering aid due to the lack of civil order in Gaza and the inability or unwillingness of Israeli forces to ensure the safety of humanitarian convoys.

“The reality is that despite our determination to deliver food, water, and medicine to survivors, our efforts to save lives are now at breaking point,” Fletcher said. He urged UN Member States to take immediate action to ensure the protection of civilians and humanitarian operations in the region.

As the violence continues, aid organizations face increasingly dire circumstances in their work to address the urgent needs of those affected. The situation underscores the critical need for the international community to prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians in conflict zones.
