Brussels – Ola Källenius, the CEO of Mercedes and president of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (Acea), warned at the Brussels Motor Show that a trade war could have a “significant negative impact” on the automotive industry.
As Donald Trump prepares for his inauguration as President of the United States on Monday, he has repeatedly threatened to impose steep tariffs on European imports.
Trump has previously stated his intention to “steal jobs from other countries,” even declaring in September, “I want German car companies to become American.”
Mr. Källenius emphasized the importance of open markets for the European automotive sector, stating, “The freer and more open the markets, the better it is for the European automotive industry,” while referring to both the United States and China.
Attending an automotive summit in Stuttgart, Germany, on Thursday, Frenchman Stéphane Séjourné, the European Commissioner for Industrial Strategy, pledged to introduce a plan aimed at “saving the sector” and enhancing European demand for clean vehicles. (January 16, 2025)
