Scientology ‘Yellow Angels’ Honored for Life-Saving Efforts During Jeseníky Region Floods

In September 2024, catastrophic floods wreaked havoc on the Jeseníky region of the Czech Republic, displacing thousands and causing extensive devastation to homes and infrastructure. Amidst this crisis, the Scientology Volunteer Ministers, affectionately known as the “Yellow Angels,” stepped in to provide critical aid. Through their tireless efforts, over 120 buildings were cleaned, and 200 families were able to return to their homes—all within two weeks. These volunteers dedicated more than 3,000 hours of service, earning national acclaim and recognition at the prestigious Ď Awards in Prague.

Rapid Response Amid Disaster

The massive flooding left the Jeseníky region in turmoil, with entire communities struggling to recover. In response, the Scientology Volunteer Ministers mobilized quickly, delivering both practical and emotional support. Wearing their signature yellow uniforms, the volunteers worked tirelessly to rebuild affected areas, providing not just physical assistance but also emotional and spiritual solace to those impacted by the disaster.

Their remarkable contributions captured national attention, culminating in recognition at the 24th annual Ď Awards ceremony held on January 8, 2025, at Prague’s National Theatre. The Ď Award, which symbolizes gratitude (with “Ď” meaning “Thank You” in Czech), celebrates acts of generosity and commitment in various fields, including charity, culture, and moral values. The Scientology Volunteer Ministers received the esteemed honor for their extraordinary humanitarian work in the aftermath of the floods.

Recognition for Outstanding Contributions

Under the leadership of David Macoun, more than 120 Scientology Volunteer Ministers collaborated to address the widespread destruction caused by the floods. Their efforts not only restored access to over 1,000 homes but also brought comfort and stability to affected residents. In addition to aiding displaced families, the volunteers provided emotional and spiritual support through what they call “assists,” a Scientology-based technique designed to help individuals cope with challenging situations.

The group’s efforts went beyond physical relief, earning them the Public Choice Award in addition to their Ď Award. This accolade was a testament to the public’s appreciation for their unwavering dedication and compassion.

Richard Langer, founder and organizer of the Ď Awards, praised the volunteers, stating, “These individuals come from diverse backgrounds—entrepreneurs, healthcare workers, teachers, and more—all united by their commitment to helping others.”

Inspiration Rooted in Scientology Principles

The humanitarian philosophy of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers is inspired by the teachings of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. His words, “If someone dislikes the crime, cruelty, injustice, and violence in this society, they can do something about it,” serve as a driving force behind the program. Hubbard envisioned Volunteer Ministers as individuals who bring kindness, trust, and relief to those in need, emphasizing values like decency, honesty, and tolerance.

Michael Kurdík, one of the group’s leaders, emphasized this ethos during his acceptance speech at the Ď Awards. “Helping others is natural for humans,” he said. “It doesn’t matter where you come from or who you are—we are all human beings, and we should help one another. That’s what a functioning society does.”

Local Impact of the “Yellow Angels”

In communities like Písečná and Nová Ves, residents affectionately referred to the Scientology Volunteer Ministers as the “Yellow Angels,” a nickname inspired by their bright yellow shirts, hats, and jackets. Beyond their physical contributions, the volunteers formed deep emotional connections with local residents, helping them cope with feelings of loss and uncertainty. Their acts of kindness and compassion left a lasting impression on the communities they served.

Ivan Arjona, Scientology’s EU and UN representative, lauded the volunteers for their efforts. “This recognition at the Ď Awards reflects not just their work in Jeseníky but also the universal values of compassion and service that we stand for. It’s a testament to what can be achieved when individuals come together to help those in need.”

A Legacy of Service

The Scientology Volunteer Minister Program was established over 30 years ago after L. Ron Hubbard called for action against what he described as declining ethics and morality in society. Since then, the program has become a global force for good, empowering individuals to step forward in times of crisis.

In Jeseníky, the “Yellow Angels” demonstrated the powerful impact of unity and resilience. Their efforts during the September 2024 floods set an inspiring example of humanitarian service, showcasing the profound difference that collective goodwill can make in rebuilding lives and communities.
