The city of Paris has announced its decision to leave the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, citing serious concerns over the network’s role in amplifying hate speech and disinformation.
The city’s official statement condemned the platform, stating, “Complex because the network reduces the reach of factual and objective messages. Impossible because the network fuels hate speech and disinformation, whose lack of moderation has become problematic.”
Paris officials described the move as “a difficult but essential decision to restore a society based on peaceful spaces of expression,” and used the opportunity to promote their newly-established account on the alternative platform Bluesky. “More than ever, Paris is attached to facts and the veracity of information,” the statement added.
This move follows a similar decision by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, who had already departed X in late 2023. In her farewell post, Hidalgo described the platform as a “weapon of mass destruction of our democracies” and heavily criticized the approach taken by its owner, Elon Musk.
Musk, who acquired the platform in 2022, has faced widespread criticism over his management of the platform, including its moderation policies and governance. In her parting words on the site, Hidalgo wrote: “This platform and its owner deliberately act to exacerbate tensions and conflicts. Let’s not be mistaken. This is a very clear political project that wants to abandon democracy and its values for powerful private interests.”
