Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s spokesperson expressed deep concern on Thursday regarding an alarming allegation, calling the incident “incredibly concerning.”
Addressing reports of MPs leaving their drinks unattended at the bar while heading off to vote, the No. 10 representative remarked: “It’s obviously not a sensible practice. However, the Prime Minister trusts individuals to exercise their own common sense in such matters.”
The Metropolitan Police issued a statement on Wednesday confirming an active investigation into the incident. They stated: “The victim is being supported by officers. No arrests have been made at this stage.” Authorities have encouraged anyone who may have been a victim or witness of spiking to come forward.
Parliamentary officials have emphasized that the incident is being taken with the utmost seriousness. Meanwhile, trade unions representing parliamentary staff have voiced concerns, noting that this incident raises important questions about safety measures on the estate.
A coalition of Labour MPs has also recently advocated for tighter regulations on alcohol sales within the parliamentary estate. This proposal is part of broader efforts to modernize the workplace culture within the House of Commons.
