“In the past year, we have repeatedly used our political influence to block this deal from moving forward,” a source stated.
Israel and Hamas are nearing an agreement on a cease-fire, as confirmed by Qatari mediators. According to an AP report on January 14, Hamas has accepted the terms of the proposed deal.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed optimism during a joint press conference with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar. He voiced hope that the agreement could pave the way for lasting peace in the Middle East.
“The ongoing discussions surrounding the cease-fire and hostage release represent a crucial development,” Tajani remarked, as reported by the Times of Israel. “We hope this breakthrough will help advance stability in the region.”
The Israeli military’s current campaign against Hamas was launched in response to the militant group’s large-scale attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in over a thousand deaths and the capture of hundreds of hostages.
Calls for a cease-fire deal have intensified as the Israeli government faces mounting pressure to secure the release of hostages still held by Hamas.
