Warsaw – In the previous year, Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, reported over 239,000 irregular entries into the European Union, with women making up just over 10% of the detected migrants.
The agency’s findings received commendation from far-right Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, highlighting the rising influence of anti-immigration parties in European elections.
According to Frontex’s announcement, there has been a notable 38% decline in irregular border crossings into the EU in 2024, marking the lowest figures since 2021, a time when migration patterns were still heavily impacted by the Covid pandemic.
This reduction is primarily attributed to a decrease in migrant arrivals via the central Mediterranean and the western Balkans, amidst escalating violence from smuggling networks.
Frontex noted that enhanced collaboration between the EU and its partners to combat smuggling operations has significantly curtailed crossings at Europe’s external borders. (January 14, 2025)
