STRASBOURG – In an interview with BTA, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola emphasized the importance of a robust Bulgaria within a united European Union to effectively address impending challenges.
Metsola recognized Bulgaria as a significant partner and ally, noting the country’s proactive measures in managing illegal migration and enhancing security. She expressed concern that delays in expanding the Schengen area have stemmed from the anxieties of member states regarding migration issues.
“The European Parliament has consistently asserted that Bulgaria and Romania are rightful members of the Schengen area. From the beginning, we have advocated for their full accession, understanding that a stronger Schengen contributes to a safer and more cohesive Europe. I extend my congratulations to the people of Bulgaria and Romania who have worked diligently for this goal,” she stated.
Metsola highlighted that protecting the Schengen framework is a collective obligation. The introduction of the Migration and Asylum Pact represented significant progress in safeguarding external borders. The revised Schengen Borders Code establishes a clear legal framework for the potential temporary reintroduction of internal border checks, particularly for security purposes. It now includes defined timelines and enhanced monitoring and reporting requirements for member states and the European Commission. She stressed that it is vital for member states to translate these measures into practical actions and collaborate effectively.
Looking ahead to 2025, Metsola outlined key challenges facing the EU, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, the efficiency of European security and defense mechanisms, the rising cost of living, the transition towards greener and digital economies, and the enlargement of the Union. Reflecting on EU-U.S. relations in light of Donald Trump’s potential re-election, she remarked that a trade war characterized by increased tariffs would be detrimental to all parties involved.
