“There exists a shared language between me and the buildings. In every restoration I undertake, I feel a deep connection. The city appreciates my efforts, and I, in turn, am profoundly grateful to the city for all it has taught me,” says Yemeni engineer Harbia Al-Himiary, reflecting on her bond with the capital city of Sana’a.
Since her childhood, Ms. Al-Himiary has been dedicated to fulfilling her dream of preserving Sana’a’s rich heritage and safeguarding “the legacy of one of the greatest civilizations.”
Currently serving as a project officer in the Cultural Heritage Unit of the Historic Cities Authority in Old Sana’a, she is actively involved in a UN-supported initiative aimed at restoring numerous historic structures across Sana’a and Yemen.
During one interaction, she inquired why a girl was learning traditional carpentry. The young trainee explained that restoring the intricate wooden decorations in her home not only honored her role as a co-owner of the property but also upheld her family’s privacy and traditions.
“My advice to any girl is simple: choose a field you are passionate about. Passion is the key to success,” says Ms. Al-Himiary. “With patience, hard work, and determination, you can achieve any ambition you set your sights on.”

Oh, how lovely! A female engineer saving ancient architecture while the rest of us mere mortals are still trying to figure out how to assemble IKEA furniture without a meltdown. Who knew restoring heritage could be a full-time job? 🤷♂️🏗️
