Brussels (Eurotoday): BMW warns Belgian owners of potential Takata airbag issues in pre-2017 cars. The company is offering free replacements at 70 centers.
Recently, BMW reached out to car owners in Belgium about possible airbag issues. It will impact cars produced prior to 2017 that carry airbags by Takata, a Japanese firm that is out of business. Takata is one of the largest suppliers to most of the car brands. Some of them include BMW and Toyota. This recall is part of the much larger issue of millions of Takata airbags recalled in the world since 2013. For instance, in August 2024, 1.4 million BMW owners were cautioned in China due to faulty airbags and nearly 400,000 BMWs were recalled in the US in July 2024. In May this year, around 500,000 Citroën and Opel cars carrying Takata airbags were also recalled.
What are the facts of the BMW airbag recall in Belgium due to Takata airbags?
BMW has put Belgian car owners on notice for a possible trouble in the driver’s airbag. This would impact cars made before 2017 that had airbags produced by Takata, a Japanese company that has since ceased to operate. Takata was one of the largest suppliers for most of the car brands, including BMW and Toyota. This recall forms part of the much larger issue of millions of Takata airbags recalled in the world since 2013. For example, in August 2024, 1.4 million BMW owners were warned in China over faulty airbags, while nearly 400,000 BMWs were recalled in the US in July 2024. In May this year, roughly 500,000 Citroën and Opel cars containing Takata airbags were also recalled.
Takata airbags have been linked to thirty deaths and over 400 injuries worldwide. Issues started in 2004, but recalls didn’t begin until ten years later. By 2017, Takata had to close due to many damage claims. BMW Belgium assures that there have been no accidents or injuries from these airbags in the country. Jeroen Lissens mentioned that this new recall is to ensure everyone’s safety.
