Despite notable progress in restoring services, a state of emergency will remain in effect on Tuesday as recovery operations continue in the wake of a widespread power outage.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will convene a meeting of the National Security Council on Tuesday morning. The session, aimed at assessing the ongoing situation, will be chaired by King Felipe VI.
The massive blackout, which began early Monday afternoon, severely impacted essential infrastructure throughout Spain and Portugal. Disruptions were reported in public transportation systems, traffic lights, hospitals, factories, digital payment services, and even nuclear power facilities.
“This is unprecedented,” Sánchez stated in a national address Monday evening. “We still lack definitive information about the cause of the outage, and I urge the public not to engage in speculation,” he added.
Early findings indicate the outage may have been the result of a significant imbalance in the power grid, though authorities continue to investigate the full scope and source of the incident.
