5,000 Swimmers Join New Year’s Dive in Ostend

Ostend (Eurotoday): Thousands participated today in Ostend’s New Year’s Dive, welcoming 2025 in 10°C waters. Safety precautions were advised.

This afternoon, on 4 January, the traditional New Year’s Dive will take place in Ostend, attracting thousands of cold-water swimming enthusiasts to welcome 2025. Yves Van Belle, a heart doctor and regular cold swimmer, says it is wonderful and benefits both body and mind. He urges individuals with health problems to consult with a doctor before engaging in this practice.

What are the benefits and risks of cold water swimming?

Some are saying cold-water swimming is the best for circulation. Others assert that it may be unhealthy, even possibly causing heart disease. According to Yves Van Belle, jumping into cold water suddenly might cause hyperventilation that can result in drowning. Instead, he recommends entering the water slowly. In contrast, it can improve the flow of blood and increase the immunity level. It reduces respiratory infections and even psychological problems. Van Belle believes that proper care can make cold-water swimming safe and beneficial.

Seasoned swimmers and casual participants alike participate in New Year’s dives like the one held in Ostend. Experts, however, caution that cold can be dangerous, especially when air temperatures reach as low as 3 degrees Celsius. To stay safe, it is essential to warm up before diving in, limit your time in the water to match its temperature, quickly dry off and dress warmly afterward, and also drink something hot after the swim to combat the cold.

Oh, nothing screams “New Year, new me” quite like voluntarily plunging into the icy depths of Ostend! Who needs a spa day when you can just freeze your bits off in 10°C water? 🥶🇧🇪

  3. Oh brilliant, nothing quite like a refreshing dip in icy waters to start your year off with a potential heart attack! 🥶 But hey, who needs warm beaches when you’ve got 5,000 nutters diving into 10°C to prove their “resilience”? Sounds like the perfect way to kick off 2025! 😅
