The United Nations children’s agency, UNICEF, received reports of an attack at a facility housing displaced families due to ongoing regional conflict, resulting in 21 children injured. Media sources report that up to 60 people were killed in an assault by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), ongoing since April 2023 against the Sudanese army. This conflict has led to a humanitarian crisis, with millions facing severe famine.
“This devastating attack on children and families already displaced is a scandal,” said Catherine Russell, UNICEF Executive Director. “Killing and injuring children are grave violations of their rights, and attacks on civilians in places of refuge are unacceptable.”
El Fasher has been under RSF siege for over 500 days, restricting movement, and access to essential resources. Civilians, including children, endure repeated bombings and worsening living conditions.
North Darfur has faced prolonged famine, with critical food security and child nutrition issues. Families have meager rations, with severe child malnutrition rising sharply. Health facilities report increasing preventable child deaths due to hunger and disease. Disrupted supply routes, aid convoy looting, and denied humanitarian access hinder relief efforts.
In response, UNICEF calls for an immediate ceasefire, lifting the siege, safe passage for fleeing civilians, unhindered humanitarian access, and accountability for attacks on civilians.
